RIGHT TO WRITE is for anyone who wants to write. From journalers to published authors, from those who’ve always dreamed of writing to those who simply need to put words on the page—this is for you.

This monthly generative writing workshop isn’t about a finished product.
It’s about the act of writing: rhythm, joy, healing, discovery, magic.

It’s about finding freedom on the page, reclaiming your creative power, and
granting yourself the permission that’s always been yours.

It’s about how you show up—for yourself, your work, and the world.

RIGHT TO WRITE IS FOR YOU:

  • If you love to write
  • If you long for a consistent writing practice
  • If you struggle to claim time for your creativity
  • If you need inspiration that will get you unstuck
  • If you need accountability and community
  • If you want to discover what you'd write if you weren't afraid

Open to all genres & all levels. Beginners welcome.

How RIGHT TO WRITE works:

On the second Tuesday of every month (Wednesday in Australia), I lead a virtual writing workshop centered on a different theme each session.

When you join, you get:

  • Two hours of generative writing every month
  • A mini-lecture from me exploring the theme
  • A wealth of writing prompts you can return to again and again
  • Camaraderie with a supportive community of writers
  • Accountability to keep your practice flowing
  • Recorded workshops—watch anytime if you can’t make it live

This is your space to reclaim your freedom, give yourself permission, lean into a supportive community, and write your heart out.

The Magic of RIGHT TO WRITE:

Cultivate Consistency

Develop a regular writing practice that will nurture your creative instincts and spark new ideas.

Build a Collection of Prompts

The monthly prompts are tools you can use again and again to enhance your craft, overcome blocks, and deepen your practice.

Unleash Your Creativity

Generative writing is about freedom and permission. It helps you break through limitations and practice trusting your ideas and yourself.

Leave Perfectionism Behind

Perfectionism is the enemy of creativity. Generative writing is an antidote to perfectionism. It is about welcoming first thoughts, experimenting with syntax, and playing with form. The better we get at withholding judgment and tending our ideas, the more ideas will visit us.

Connect with Other Writers

You’ll be amazed at what happens when writers from around the world create together.

Fall in Love with Writing Again

Writing regularly, in community, will remind you why you love to write. Tend your creativity. It belongs to you. It’s your birthright.

Know a writer who would benefit from RIGHT TO WRITE?

Give the workshop series as a gift!

Share the love!

Meet Sarah Sentilles

I've been leading RIGHT TO WRITE for eight years. It was the first online workshop I ever offered and continues to be one of the key ways I support writers and their creativity. I love facilitating these monthly workshops.

I've been writing seriously for almost 30 years. And in that time I've learned how important it is to stay connected to my biggest vision. To protect time for my art. I've also learned writing is primarily about listening. Which means we need to slow down and trust ourselves and the ideas that visit us. I designed RIGHT TO WRITE to help you practice that and to find more freedom on the page.

Here's a little bit about me: I'm the author of five books, including Draw Your Weapons, which won the 2018 PEN Award for Creative Nonfiction. My most recent book, Stranger Care: A Memoir of Loving What Isn’t Ours, was published by Random House and was a New York Times Editor’s Choice and Idaho Book of the Year. My writing has appeared in The New York TimesThe New Yorker, and The Atlantic, among other publications. I've had residencies at Hedgebrook and Yaddo. I earned a bachelor's degree at Yale and master's and doctoral degrees at Harvard. I'm also the co-founder of the Alliance of Idaho, which works to protect the human rights of immigrants. I live in Idaho's Wood River Valley, with my family.

RIGHT TO WRITE FAQs

What is RIGHT TO WRITE?
It’s a monthly generative writing workshop series, now in its eighth year. Each month focuses on a different theme and includes two hours of guided writing prompts and a mini lecture by me.

What happens in a session?
We explore the monthly theme, write from a series of prompts, and explore new possibilities for your work. You can use the prompts to generate fresh material, experiment, or write into an existing project.

Who can join?
All writers are welcome—poets, essayists, novelists, playwrights, journalers, and more. People of all levels and genres find a home here.

Why do you use poetry for the prompts?
Poems are small enough to hold in a single glance, yet rich with craft and possibility. They help us see new ways of working and can break us out of self-imposed limits.

Do you read my work?
No. RIGHT TO WRITE is not a critique space. I encourage you to keep your new writing close; your own opinion is the one that matters most.

Are the sessions recorded?
Yes. Every session is recorded, so you can catch up if you miss one or return to your favorite themes later.

What’s the commitment?
RIGHT TO WRITE is designed as a year-long practice.

What’s your refund policy?
Refunds are available if requested within 30 days of purchase. A payment plan, however, is not a subscription. When you choose the payment plan option, you’re responsible for all payments. You cannot request a refund after 30 days. For example, if you’re on month 7 of 12 of your payment plan, and you no longer want to take the workshop, you are still responsible for the 5 remaining payments.

How do I know which workshop is right for me?

· WORD CAVE is for you if you want short, immersive support—a four-day retreat to protect your time, reset your writing practice, and make significant progress on a project.

· WORD RIVER is for you if you’re craving long-term support—a six-month or year-long commitment to build consistency, deepen your practice, and stay accountable with a trusted cohort.

· RIGHT TO WRITE is for you if you want ongoing inspiration—monthly generative workshops that keep your creativity flowing, spark new ideas, and connect you with a vibrant community of writers.
