These are not your average writing workshops.

For two decades, I’ve been helping artists and writers make their work. For me, it feels like activism to support you to create what only you can create. It’s good medicine for all of us.

My teaching philosophy is rooted in helping you trust yourself, your writing, your process, and your creativity. I don't play on your fears or sense of scarcity. My workshops are not competitive.

I don't believe faster is better. Art takes the time it takes -- and that is right and perfect. Writing is 99 percent about patience and listening.

Workshops are open to all levels of writers and all genres. Whether you're a beginner or you've been nominated for the Booker Prize, you're welcome here.

The world needs your art more than ever. Let me support you to create it.

WHAT MAKES MY WORKSHOPS MAGIC:

Community & Connection

You'll be surprised at the deep community that is formed in these workshops. They are not competitive; they are a sanctuary. I believe we never write alone, and in all of my workshops, this is deeply true. What would you create it you trusted that your art is well supported.

Exceptional Facilitation

These are not your average workshops. Two decades of teaching and writing have shaped my approach, which is rooted in my belief that when we make art, we're exercising the muscles we need to help repair the world. I love to hold space and foster transformation, both on and off the page.

Generative Writing

Generative writing is a practice of welcoming first thoughts, listening, and learning to trust ourselves and our ideas. I create generative writing prompts that propel writers forward and feel like magic. They offer inspiration and direction, helping writers clear blocks and take more risks on the page.

Fall in Love with Writing Again

Whether you're looking to start or finish a project or you just want more creativity in your life, these workshops will support you. Writing regularly, in community, will remind you why you love to write. Tend your creativity. It belongs to you. It’s your birthright.

Fragments of World Alteration

What if your art is helping repair the world? What if every time we make something -- a sentence, a painting, a garden -- we're remembering it's possible to introduce something new into the world? Which means we're connecting to our agency. The world is made, and it can be unmade and remade to be more just and life-giving. Writing helps us remember that.

Find Freedom on the Page

Generative writing is about freedom and permission. It helps you break through limitations and practice trusting your ideas and yourself. It's also about leaving perfectionism behind. The better we get at withholding judgment and tending our ideas, the more ideas will visit us.

FAQ

Who are these workshops for?
Workshops are open to all levels of writers and to artists of all kinds — from beginners and journalers to published authors, from painters to playwrights to performers to every other kind of maker you can imagine. Everyone is welcome.

How does pricing work?
You can pay in full or choose an interest-free payment plan. If you need a different option, please reach out to me.

When do my payments start?
Payments begin at the time of purchase, not when the workshop starts.

What is your refund policy?
You may request a full refund within 30 days of purchase. I understand that life happens and is often complicated, so I try to be as accommodating as possible. But please keep in mind that enrollment for most workshops – especially WORD CAVES and WORD RIVERS – is extremely limited. If you register and then request a refund, you will have taken a spot away from someone else.

What is your refund policy for payment plans?
You may request a refund within 30 days of purchase. A payment plan, however, is not a subscription. It is something I offer to make my workshops more accessible and affordable for more people. When you choose the payment plan, you’re responsible for all payments. You cannot request a refund after 30 days. For example, if you’re on month 7 of 12 of your payment plan, and you no longer want to take the workshop, you are still responsible for the 5 remaining payments.

What is your refund policy for subscriptions?
You can request a refund within 30 days of your initial purchase (Ex: If you subscribe on April 1st, you can request a refund before May 1st; you cannot request refunds for any months that follow the initial purchase.). You can cancel your subscription at any time. When you cancel, you will lose access to the subscription and all its content at the end of your subscription billing period.

Are live workshops recorded? / Do I need to attend every session live?
It’s always powerful to attend the live sessions when possible, but workshops are recorded (except for Office Hours and Word Caves), so if you miss a live session, you can catch up when your schedule allows.

Do you read my work if I sign up for a workshop?
No. These workshops are about more about process than product – though you will make good progress on whatever you’re working on. I don’t read or critique participant work, and in fact I encourage you to keep your new writing close to you. The opinion that matters most at this stage is your own. (I occasionally take on one-on-one clients for manuscript review; email me if you’re interested.)

Do I need to be in a specific time zone to attend?
No. All workshops are held online via Zoom. You’ll receive a link after you register. Times are listed in Pacific Time (US) with a conversion for Australian time zones. If you need to figure out what time the live workshops are where you live, you can use this handy website: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html.

What do I need to prepare?
I will email you with preparation instructions or you can find them on the course page. But usually what you’ll need is a reliable internet connection, a notebook or your preferred writing implements/device, and a quiet space if possible.

Are your workshops accessible?
I provide live captions for all sessions. If you have additional accessibility needs, please email me, and I’ll do my very best to accommodate.

Is there a community component?
Yes. For all live workshops, you’ll be part of a supportive, non-competitive group of writers and artists. Each live workshop includes opportunities to share about your process and to ask questions (always optional).

Can I gift a workshop to someone else?
Absolutely. You can gift a workshop to someone else on that workshop’s checkout page.

Do you have a referral program?
Yes. When you refer someone, they receive 10% off their registration, and you earn a credit toward your next workshop purchase. You can find this by logging in to your account, clicking your icon in the upper right-hand corner, and then selecting “Refer a Friend.”

What if I join after the first session has already started?
Yes – you can always join workshops when they are already in progress, whether that means showing up late (no problem!) or enrolling in a workshop series that has already started (also no problem!). Recordings allow you to catch up on what you miss. WORD CAVES and WORD RIVERS almost always sell out, so in that case, late registration is rarely possible. You’ll have to wait for the next round of workshops.

Do I need any special software or account?
Just Zoom, which is free. And you’ll need to join Teachable, which is also free.
